Porsche on Parade/ Festivals of Speed St. Petersburg
Sparkling Porsches were displayed on Bayshore Drive in front of the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel on April 2 as Suncoast Region PCA celebrated “Porsche on Parade”, part of Festivals of Speed – St. Petersburg. Page Obenshain worked with Festival organizers to create the “show within a show”. A portion of each entry went to the Children’s Dream Fund, a charity selected by FOS. The club also collected donations for “Ready for Life”, which helps young adults emerge successfully from foster care.
Registration for the show included entry into the Festival of Speed. Bert Smith Porsche was the presenting sponsor, and welcomed all the Porsche owners with breakfast, lunch, and hospitality throughout the day. They used the occasion to introduce the stunning new Panamera and displayed an assortment of other beautiful Porsches.
The FOS center circle in Vinoy Park included a special display of 21 air-cooled Porsches, arranged by Steve Gaglione. The Porsches ranged from original classics to superbly restored examples. The 1974 Carrera of Gerry Dunn was judged first overall, winning a Festivals of Speed trophy as Best Vintage Air Cooled Porsche.
Bert Smith also presented trophies to the top entries in the air-cooled display. First Place was won by the Tangerine 1969 911 S of Michael Owen. Second Place went to the red 1989 930 of Jamie Moore. Third Place went to the black 1996 911 C4S of David Rees.
In the club’s wash and shine show, on the brick pavement of Bayshore Drive, sixteen modern Porsches were displayed. People’s Choice voting was used to determine winners in five classes. Frank and Leta Chaney’s black 2015 Cayman GTS was voted the favorite in class and overall Best of Show. Making this even more impressive, Frank had driven the car in a Suncoast Region track event at Sebring the day before, demonstrating how you can go fast AND look good!
The 2002 Turbo of Joe Waunsch was judged Best Contemporary Porsche, winning a Festivals of Speed trophy.
